About Minnesota Pay Explorer
Minnesota Pay Explorer turns the State of Minnesota's employee salary data into something you can search, sort and compare in seconds. Look up an employee, see how an agency or job title pays, and follow how pay has changed from one fiscal year to the next.
Where the numbers come from
Every figure on this site comes from the State of Minnesota's public employee salary files, published by Minnesota Management and Budget: one line per employee record for each fiscal year from FY 2011 on. A Minnesota fiscal year runs from July 1 to June 30, so FY 2026 ends on June 30, 2026. The files are loaded into your browser and analyzed there. We do not edit or estimate pay amounts. When something looks wrong, check it against the official record.
How to read the figures
- Paid in year
- Total wages paid during the fiscal year: regular pay plus overtime plus other pay. It is lower than the base rate for anyone who started, left, worked part time or changed jobs during the year.
- Overtime and other pay
- Overtime is reported separately and is included in “Paid in year”. Other pay covers extras such as shift differentials and leave payouts.
- Base pay
- The pay rate on record, either an hourly wage or a biweekly amount. “Annual base rate” converts it to a full-time yearly figure using 2,080 hours (40 hours × 52 weeks) or 26 biweekly pay periods. It does not scale down for part-time positions.
- Agency and department
- The agency is the employer, such as the Transportation Department. The department, shown in smaller text, is the office or unit within it.
- County
- The county of the employee's work location. The state began publishing it in FY 2020. For FY 2011 to FY 2019 we fill it in from the county later recorded for the same work-location code. About 2% of records from those years have a location code that never appears later, so their county is shown as not recorded.
- Status at year end
- Whether the employee was still on the payroll on June 30, the last day of the fiscal year.
- By person or every record
- One employee can have several lines in a year, for example after a promotion or when holding two positions. The state reports one pay total per person per year, covering all of their positions, so we show it on one of those lines and the others show no separate pay. “By person” combines a person’s lines for the same fiscal year, agency and county. “Every record” shows each position line.
- Top titles and agencies
- Rankings that group people by job title or agency. Small groups are hidden by default because a median of two people says little.
Limits worth knowing
People are matched by name across years, because the state changes its employee numbers from time to time. When two employees with the same name appear in the same year, those numbers tell them apart and each gets a separate pay history page; two people with the same name who never overlap may still be combined, and one person whose name was recorded differently in different years appears twice. The state files do not include gender, so this site does not compare pay by gender. Medians and averages describe groups, not individuals, and comparisons between groups are raw figures that do not adjust for job, seniority, hours or partial-year pay. Amounts are not adjusted for inflation.
